When “No” Still Feels Like a Win

As a micro business owner (just me!) it can be all too easy for the business to feel personal. I created it, nurtured it, and built it around my ethos of providing an affordable, friendly, and reliable service to make life easier for clerks, charity workers, and small business owners who already have far too many plates to spin.
I genuinely love delivering my service. But if I’m honest, it can be hard not to take it personally when someone doesn’t choose my quote. When you’re a one-person business, it can feel like they’re saying no to you, not just the service.
That’s why I ask for feedback from people who won’t be continuing their journey with me to find out what I am doing well and what I can improve on. It’s a small step, but it’s been incredibly powerful.
Today, I received a completed questionnaire from someone who decided not to move forward. And reading it was such a boost. They felt I’d done everything right in my communications and in my quote. Their reason for saying no had nothing to do with me doing anything wrong. I’d done it all right.
Of course, I’m disappointed they’re not joining me—at least not yet! But it feels great to know that the part of the process we did share left them feeling confident, informed, and positive.
Sometimes, “no” isn’t a rejection. Sometimes, it’s just timing, priorities, or circumstances. And sometimes, it’s a quiet reminder that you’re doing exactly what you set out to do.
